How to Update Nameservers for Your Domain
Nameservers tell the internet where your domain's DNS records are hosted. Updating nameservers is required when you move your website to a new hosting provider or start using a third-party DNS service.
What Are Nameservers?
Nameservers are the servers that hold your domain's DNS records (A, CNAME, MX, etc.). When someone visits your domain, their browser first contacts the nameservers to find out where your website is hosted.
Example nameservers:
ns1.yourhostingprovider.com
ns2.yourhostingprovider.comFinding Your Nameservers
For {{COMPANY_NAME}} Hosting
Your nameservers are provided in:
- Your welcome email when you sign up for hosting
- Your hosting dashboard under Server Information
- The cPanel or DirectAdmin sidebar under Server Details
Current Nameservers
Check what nameservers your domain currently uses:
nslookup -type=ns yourdomain.comOr use an online tool like whatsmydns.net.
Updating Nameservers
Step 1: Log in to the Client Portal
- Go to {{SUPPORT_URL}}/client
- Log in with your credentials
Step 2: Navigate to Domain Management
- Go to Domains in the main menu
- Click on the domain you want to update
- Click Nameservers or DNS Management
Step 3: Update the Nameservers
- Select Use custom nameservers
- Enter the new nameserver addresses:
- Nameserver 1: ns1.example.com
- Nameserver 2: ns2.example.com
- Add additional nameservers if required (NS3, NS4)
- Click Save or Update Nameservers
Step 4: Wait for Propagation
Nameserver changes take 2-48 hours to propagate worldwide. During this time:
- Your website may intermittently load from the old or new server
- Email delivery may be temporarily affected
- Do not make further DNS changes until propagation completes
Tip: Propagation usually completes within 2-4 hours for most regions. You can check propagation status at whatsmydns.net.
Common Scenarios
Moving to {{COMPANY_NAME}} Hosting
Update your domain nameservers to the {{COMPANY_NAME}} nameservers provided in your welcome email.
Using Cloudflare
If you want to use Cloudflare for CDN and DNS:
- Sign up at cloudflare.com and add your domain
- Cloudflare will provide you with two nameservers
- Update your domain nameservers to the Cloudflare nameservers
Pointing to a Different Host
If you want to keep DNS management at your registrar but point the website elsewhere, use A records instead of changing nameservers.
Troubleshooting
Website Not Loading After Nameserver Change
- Wait at least 4-6 hours for propagation
- Clear your browser cache and DNS cache
- Verify the correct nameservers were entered (check for typos)
- Confirm your hosting account is active on the destination server
Email Stopped Working
- If you changed nameservers, your MX records are now managed by the new DNS provider
- Add your email MX records at the new DNS provider
