How to Upgrade Your Hosting Plan

How to Upgrade Your Hosting Plan

Upgrading your hosting plan gives you more resources — disk space, bandwidth, email accounts, databases, and more — to accommodate your growing website. This guide walks you through the upgrade process, billing implications, and when to consider upgrading.

When to Upgrade

Consider upgrading your hosting plan when:

  1. Disk space is running low: Your websites and databases are using more than 80% of allocated space
  2. Bandwidth limits are being reached: Monthly transfer is consistently near the limit
  3. Site performance is slow: CPU and memory limits on your current plan are insufficient
  4. You need more features: Additional databases, email accounts, addon domains, or SSL certificates
  5. Traffic is increasing: More visitors require more server resources
  6. You are launching new sites: Additional websites need more hosting resources

Tip: Check your resource usage in your control panel (cPanel or DirectAdmin) before upgrading. Sometimes optimization (caching, image compression, database cleanup) can resolve performance issues without an upgrade.

How to Upgrade

Step 1: Review Available Plans

  1. Log in to your {{COMPANY_NAME}} client portal at {{SUPPORT_URL}}
  2. Navigate to My Services and select your current hosting plan
  3. Click Upgrade/Downgrade or Change Plan
  4. Review the available upgrade options and compare features

Step 2: Select Your New Plan

  1. Compare the features of each plan (disk space, bandwidth, accounts, etc.)
  2. Select the plan that best meets your current and anticipated needs
  3. Click Choose or Select Plan

Step 3: Review Pricing

  1. The system calculates the prorated cost — you pay only the difference for the remaining billing period
  2. Review the upgrade cost displayed
  3. Check the new renewal price for future billing cycles

Step 4: Complete Payment

  1. Select your payment method
  2. Confirm the upgrade
  3. Payment is processed immediately
  4. The upgrade is applied to your account, typically within minutes

How Prorated Billing Works

When you upgrade mid-billing cycle, you are charged a prorated amount:

  • Credit: The unused portion of your current plan is credited
  • Charge: The remaining period on the new plan is charged
  • You pay: The difference between the two

Example:

  • Current plan: Rs 200/month, 15 days remaining = Rs 100 credit
  • New plan: Rs 400/month, 15 days remaining = Rs 200 charge
  • Upgrade cost: Rs 200 - Rs 100 = Rs 100

At the next renewal, you will be billed the full price of the new plan.

What Happens After Upgrading

  1. Immediate resource increase: New disk space, bandwidth, and resource limits are applied right away
  2. No downtime: Upgrades are seamless with no interruption to your websites
  3. Existing data preserved: All your files, databases, emails, and configurations remain intact
  4. Control panel updates: Resource limits in cPanel/DirectAdmin reflect the new plan
  5. Confirmation email: You receive an email confirming the upgrade and new plan details

Tip: After upgrading, verify your new resource limits in your control panel. Go to cPanel > right sidebar to see your new disk and bandwidth allocations.

Upgrade Paths

Shared Hosting Upgrades

  • Starter > Business > Enterprise
  • Upgrades are instant and automated

VPS Hosting Upgrades

  • Increase RAM, CPU, disk space, or bandwidth
  • Some VPS upgrades may require a brief reboot (1-2 minutes)
  • Major upgrades (e.g., doubling RAM) may require migration to a new node

Reseller Hosting Upgrades

  • Increase total disk space and bandwidth allocation
  • Add more cPanel accounts to your reseller plan

Troubleshooting

Upgrade Option Not Available

  • There may not be a higher plan available in your current product line
  • Contact support for custom upgrade options or migration to a different product

Resources Not Reflecting After Upgrade

  • Allow up to 15 minutes for the upgrade to propagate
  • Clear your browser cache and log back into the control panel
  • Contact support if resources still show old values after 30 minutes

Payment Failed

  • Verify your payment method has sufficient funds
  • Try an alternative payment method
  • Check if your bank is blocking the transaction
